Guanajuato is both a city and a state in Mexico. It is located in the center of the country in a valley of the Sierra Madre Mountains.
Like Taxco, Guanajuato was a silver mining town in is early days and has retained much of its historical architecture,
some dating back to late medieval times.
And also like Taxco, it has many steep, winding cobblestone streets.
Guanajuato International Cervantes Festival
The best time to visit Guanajuato is in October for the International Cervantes Festival ("Festival Cervantino"). This festival of the arts is one
of the the most important cultural events in all of Mexico. In other months of the year, you can still enjoy music, dance and theater performances by
musicians and other street performers.
Guanajuato is also famous for its museums, which include the Mummy Museum, Museum of Natural History, and the Diego Rivera Museum.
